TheRockstar Energy Open returns to Portland’s iconic Waterfront Park August 14–16 for its third year and has officially unveiled the full athlete roster for 2026. The highly anticipated free event will feature three days of world-class skateboarding, two nights of high-energy live music, and an immersive festival experience celebrating skate culture in the heart of downtown. In addition to elite men’s and women’s street and park competitions, fans can enjoy live concerts featuring breakout emo favorites Hot Mulligan and punk staples PUP on Friday, followed by hardcore band Angel Du$t and alt-rock favorites Basement on Saturday after each day's skateboarding finals. The weekend will also feature exciting brand activations and experiences that celebrate the culture, creativity and community of skateboarding. Chris is from Sacramento, he grew up skating under the heavy influences of Miles Silvas and Miika Adamov (peep their shared part from duets). He's now applying his brand of gnarly skating all over San Diego. He linked up with some of the best filmers in SD and just put the finishing touches on this rad part for Slappy's Garage skateshop. Exploring Seoul on a Skateboard: KPop & Kimchi Tour, Episode 2

Episode 2 features a demo at Seoul’s Ttukseum Hangang Skate Park. The blossoms were in full bloom and the locals were rippin’ around on scooters, blades, skateboards & bmx bikes. A huge shout out to Daily Grind Mag & Labros for making this event go off.

After a quick bite at 7 ELEVEN we took the the 7 train across the Hangang River to the beautiful Banpo-Dong district to skate the famed granite banks. Bonestalone, Leo, Caroline, JJ & Yiyo slayed the spot with a heavy bag of tricks.

Richie Löffler arrived at the golden hour straight from the airport after a wild journey through Abu Dhabi. Salmon knew of a spot under the bridge so the squad skated across the Han River where JZ found a sketchy drop in off a broken rail and Leo finessed a 180 nose grind down a big set.

Bonestalone capp’d the night off like a true ninja with a steezy Ollie into a steep bank at the illustrious heavily secured Dongdeamun Design Plaza. The pedestrians were going wild after seeing this stunt go down.

A truly epic day in Seoul.

Pawnshop: Built on Family and Skateboarding

For as long as Donovon Piscopo can remember, he and his father, Anthony, have been skateboarding. Raised in Covina, California, Donovon grew up in a scene that wasn't started by his father but has been 100-percent cultivated by him. Their family business, Pawnshop, has been around for 16 years, but it wasn't the first skate shop in town. In fact, Anthony worked at the shop under a different name in the late ‘80s to early ‘90s, during the time Donovon was born. Anthony remembers that first shop as a sort of "housing project," serving as a much-needed positive place for kids in the community — including himself.

Today, Pawnshop serves Covina in that same way. "My entire skate career is because of Anthony and Donovon," says John Fitzgerald, reflecting on the efforts the Piscopos made to help him and so many others. Donovon hopes to one day take over Pawnshop from his father and eventually pass it on to his daughter. One thing is for sure: They don't do this for the money. "It was built on my dad's faith and love of skating."

"Martin Vega came to visit Germany with his friend Luca Ledebur who I met in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was impressed with Luca's skating and told him one day he should come to Hamburg to film a part. So he asked if his friend Martin could come along and that's how we met. The level these two were skating at was crazy, so I broke out my old VX to film them. Later, Arne Stolt took over the filming and Martin ended up staying for six months and making a bunch of new friends in Germany. We're happy to have him on our shop team and stoked about this part. In Memoriam: Marc Johnson (1977-2026) Cupertino Spot Tributes

It has been just over one month since Marc Johnson left this world. In the mortal sense he is no longer here. Yet I feel he is more present than he ever was. Almost like skateboarding’s Obi-Wan Kenobi—his energy feels stronger now than it did last month. “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” As if the sum total of Marc’s life’s work—his skateboarding, his art, his writing, his humor, his song choices, his style can only now come fully into scope. Only now, somewhat tragically can we see the true size of it.

And it is absolutely massive. Marc gave so much to our culture, he indirectly set the table for so many things. Each and every one of us who loved Marc, either as the living breathing person he was, or as the crazy talented hilarious superhero character he played as a pro skater have felt a void over this past month we didn’t even really know was there. We didn’t know what we had until it was gone? No, we did know, I did know—he is my favorite skateboarder from our generation. I just didn’t realize how far it went.

I know that others feel the same way. I know this personally because I received a near landslide of Marc Johnson spots and tributes for my Star Maps Instagram project. So many that I could not even hope to keep up or post them all. It was almost overwhelming. But their testament to Marc’s influence could not be missed. I had thought about writing a long article about his life and his passing. I still might. But right now it feels more appropriate to share one of the many tributes I received.

Shona Sanzgiri is an editor at Apple, a freelance writer, and grew up skating in and around San Jose. In early June I received my first guest essay for my Star Maps project from Shona as a tribute to MJ and all the spots he immortalized in Cupertino, California (famously the home of Apple). Even in such a small slice of CA—the outsized influence and impact on others lives, let alone lifting up the whole skate scene is colossal. In addition to mourning the loss of Marc, I feel many of us are simultaneously mourning the loss of our own youths, the vibrant scenes, and the skate culture that Marc was such a big catalyst of. Shona: Marc Johnson's passing left me more emotional than I expected. I'm 41 and it's been years since I skated with any determination, but scrolling Instagram that day I realized some of my old San Jose skate buddies were as much mourning Marc as that brief moment when San Jose's skateboarding scene felt enormous.

Many of the spots burned in skaters' memories worldwide aren't actually in San Jose, but Cupertino, the suburb where I went to high school. This was pre-iPhone, so back then you'd have to explain where it was. To make things easier, I'd just say "San Jose" and promptly get scolded by a friend.

In the early 2000s, Marc and some of the Tilt Mode guys had moved into a house on Tantau Avenue, down the street from friends of mine with a ramp in their front yard, and right around the corner from one of my oldest friends, who's John Cardiel's younger brother. One day I showed up expecting to bail front blunts for the millionth time and instead found John, Marc, Jerry Hsu, and Jesse Erickson standing on the deck of the ramp. Only one of us had the nerve to join them. A little more than two decades later, that friend, Jesse, and Marc are all gone.

I met Marc in 1998—I was 12, he was maybe 20—at one of San Jose's many circle parks, Maywood, skating in my private school uniform and the only sneakers my school allowed: Emerica MJs. He was gracious and oddly engaged, giving detailed trick tips and helping me land my first kickflip, which excited him almost more than it did me. "Holy shit, it worked!" he laughed.

From then on I saw him regularly at local spots like the Cupertino Library, our crew's own EMB, a submerged plaza with ledges running all along the perimeter. The library underwent a major renovation and the plaza was filled and replaced with trees, ground-level fountains, and benches where families sit to watch their kids run around, oblivious to history in a place with little of it. More than 30 years ago in the first two Maple videos, MJ ran circles in its square, doing what I think was the first nollie backside flip tailslide in a video. Across the street is a ledge going across a low five-stair that was skated by many Tilt Moders, including Marc and Louie Barletta.

Given its size, it's funny how much of Cupertino was immortalized by Marc. In the first Tilt Mode video, Marc filmed a nighttime line at a Land Rover dealership with two gently sloping sand-colored banks. Driving past it, Yo La Tengo's "Decora" plays in my mind.

A short drive from Apple's old headquarters there's a trifecta of noteworthy spots: The metal-edged circle park De Anza Park, back-to-back ledges at Stocklmeier Elementary School, and the white step-up ledge in a Walgreen's parking lot, where Marc floats a slow moving nollie heelflip out of a nose manual.

Starbird Park in nearby Campbell hosted many skate jams on account of its smooth basketball court and handful of ledges. I will always remember it for the symmetrical lines Marc filmed there, ones that required the swift, balletic footwork he was known for, including a half cab noseslide and a nollie back tail on the main ledge and a switch frontside 180 followed by a backside flip over a pair of colored mounds in the playground. I watched him do such lines in person, studying how his feet seemed to fall into place for the second trick after the first, how that required thinking about skateboarding as the sum of its parts rather than obsessing about the present.

Revisiting all of these places without hearing the jubilant din of skateboarding and teenage and twenty-something guys laughing and talking shit, I felt profoundly alone and acutely aware of my gray hairs. There was a time when you'd be thrilled to have any of the spots to yourself. Now the silence is sobering. The words "Tilt Mode" sound like an anachronism. Marc is dead. Once these banal liminal spaces and the anodyne suburbs in which they are still found took on an outsized importance to us and skateboarders around the world. And we owe so much of that to Marc.—Shona Sanzgiri

SHUT x Russ Pope for Ace Hotel Recap

To kick off the 15th Annual Adult Go Skateboarding Day, SHUT Skateboards partnered with Ace Hotel Brooklyn and artist Russ Pope on a limited-edition collection featuring a skateboard, T-shirt, and hat. A portion of the proceeds from every item sold benefits the Harold Hunter Foundation, helping support its mission of empowering underserved youth through skateboarding.

The morning brought together skaters from all over for coffee, breakfast, product releases, raffles, and giveaways before everyone rolled out together from Ace Hotel Brooklyn to meet up with the official Adult Go Skateboarding Day skate through New York City.

Go Skateboarding Day NYC Video Recap

As he does every year (15 years now actually!), Alex Corporan and Mike A. Cohen organized another super-fun "Adult" Go Skateboarding Day. The day started at the Brooklyn ACE Hotel, then headed up into the LES for a pitstop at 169 Bar for free pickles and bevs from AriZona and Dirty Water. Then it was time to push up and over the Williamsburg Bridge, but not before stopping right in the middle for a game of SKATE.

Down at the bottom of the bridge lies the famous Monument spot, so we had to session there. Next it was on down into the heart of Williamsburg to join the annual Cheese Block Party. A jump ramp sesh went off while Depresion Tropical, Prostitution, and Fiona Silver all rocked sets in the street. The weather was perfect and there was really no better place to be on GSD than NYC. Thanks to Alex, Michael, Gizmo, JZ, Chum Media and all the sponsors!

Super Skate Posse Giveback w/ Paul Rodriguez

Never not posting the amazing work the Super Skate Posse is doing around the country. Giving hundreds of kids their first skateboard, shoes, a helmet, and an experience they'll never forget. Paul Rodriguez and his Primitive Skateboards brand teamed up with the most recent Giveback in Anaheim, California. Check out the video and get involved if you can.

June 6th, 2026, The Posse teamed up with TILLYS to host a community-first skateboarding giveback event at Center Greens Skatepark in Anaheim, CA in partnership with Tillys Life Center, Primitive Skateboards and The City of Anaheim, featuring professional skateboarder and Primitive co-founder Paul Rodriguez and his team. The event also included support from local youth organizations, including Project S.A.Y. (Support Anaheim’s Youth), and schools served by Tillys Life Center including Savanna High School and Magnolia High School.

On the heels of Mental Health Awareness Month, the event provided an uplifting experience for 100 students. Multiple studies have proven that skateboarding builds personal resilience, creates social connection and belonging and Tillys was excited to facilitate that experience through their partnership with Super Skate Posse, a nonprofit dedicated to uplifting kids in underserved communities by providing access to skateboarding. The event was also supported by Primitive Skateboards, New Balance Numeric footwear and Independent Trucks allowing each participant to receive a complete skateboard, skate shoes and a helmet in addition to a free skate lesson.

Following the lesson, the event opened to the public for an exciting professional skate demo from Paul Rodriguez, the Primitive Skate team and special guests: Antwuan Dixon, Dominick Walker and Tillys ambassador Ryan Townley.

'Static VI' Raw Tapes: New Orleans

Raw Tapes season is back. Static VI Raw Tapes took a little hiatus but it has returned with episode 5, as Josh Stewart and co. head down to the sweatiest skate town in the USA, New Orleans. "One big goal with this video was to film the majority of each skater's part in their natural habitats. So we spent a decent amount of time sweating it out in the big easy hitting some seriously crusty spots with Jordan Trahan and his crew to help build out his part with the NOLA vibe."

Go Skateboarding Day NYC 2026 Recap

As it usually is in New York City, June 21 was one for the books. There were three main Go Skateboarding Day events I wanted to check out, and as fate would have it, they all wove seamlessly into an incredible day skating around the city, seeing old friends, and meeting new ones. That's just how it is in the summer in the city. First up, Josh Zickert threw a cash-for-tricks jam in Tompkins Square Park with the help of Weedmaps. Arizona Iced Teas were on hand and guys and girls threw down on a series of obstacles in the park. There are a ton of them in Tompkins right now! After the jam at Tompkins wrapped up, Shamp had a car we could all fit in and we were headed toward the Banks, but first needed to stop by 169 Bar to link up with Alex Corporan, Gizmo, Matt Kruz, and everyone doing the infamous Adult Skateboarding Day. They had a full schedule of events from Brooklyn to Manhattan and back, but we timed it perfectly and hung with everyone for a bit in front of 169:

From 169, it was a short skate down to the Brooklyn Banks where Vans was putting on a huge event at the newly opened small Banks section. It was a madhouse down there!

After a while it was decided the Banks event was simply too packed to watch or shoot so we bounced. Don't worry, Vans had Anthony Acosta and Atiba there, so everything was documented and I'm sure will be easy to see very soon.

We headed back to Williamsburg, Brooklyn! The Adult GSD had it's ending stop at the annual Cheese Block party in front of Golden Years, and a stone's throw from every skater's favorite bar/restaurant The Commodore. The next several hours were filled with live music, a jump ramp, moshing, and a perfect summer sunset in Brooklyn. There's nothing like it. Shout out to the bands: Depresion Tropical, Prostitution and Fiona Silver. Follow them all on IG and Spotify and run up their numbers. It was super fun to shoot live music and skateboarding together! Been a minute!

Dave Swift's first photo book All In is out, and you should get yourself a copy. It's packed with Dave's photography from the 80s to present day. The amount of legendary stuff Dave has captured with his cameras is staggering. He's been there for everything and shot every icon that's come and gone.

We sat down with Dave recently to get some of the stories behind some choice photos in his book. We've been rolling them out on our IG, but this one about Heath Kirchart got a ton of attention—just read through the comments. It's an insane story and an amazing way to end a perfect career.

“Ye Olde Destruction” with Band of Horses Live

"Hey peeps - Back in January 2026 my buddy Tim McManus at Hed Hi Studio in Charleston, South Carolina hosted a screening of “Ye olde destruction” with Creighton Barrett and Brett Ash from "Band of Horses" and there friend Charlie Kendall scoring the film live. This screening was a 100% fundraiser for "The Bridge Spot" the local DIY spot, which we raised $1500 towards there building projects. Which I was really stoked about supporting. Anyway, here is a newly edited version of “Ye olde destruction” with footage of these guys scoring the film live cut into it. I just wanted to thank all involved, i love how this film morph's with different creative input and can continue to support other creative outlets and project (diy's) alike. Origins of the Frontside Pop-Shove, Part 2

SOMEHOW A FULL DECADE HAS TICKED OFF SINCE WE CHECKED IN WITH STEVE ROCCO AND TRACED THE 1ST EVER FRONTSIDE POP SHOVE-IT TO ONE HE DID AT A DEMO IN VENEZUELA (OVER A 3” PIPE) IN ‘79. AS I BEGAN MY DAY YESTERDAY I GOT A RANDOM EMAIL FROM STEVE.

Rocco: Hey Mackenzie, it’s been a while. I just got this video from Tony Guerrero from the 1978 Northern California Championship when I was 18. I guess I was doing frontside pop shove-its before ‘79 in Venezuela. I think I never counted it as a trick until I did it over something. Anyway, I remember how much work you put into that article so seeing this reminded me of you. Hope you are well.

Attached was video of his ’78 contest run and right there at 1:21—an unmistakable FS pop-shove. I assume Steve did the trick before this run but this is now officially the first footage of the trick on flat, and a full four years before Rodney Mullen unveiled the flatground Ollie! The one in Venezuela still stands as the first shove-it (backside or frontside) over an obstacle.

This new Berkeley contest clip would place the first FS pop shove in ‘78?

It’s the earliest one I’ve found. It was actually filmed by Ray Meyer’s younger brother Maurice. Ray is the guy in the beginning of the video.

Do you remember what place you got?

I got first. But I can’t remember what song I skated to. Maybe the Ramones “I Wanna Be Sedated.” But then I updated the routine by 1980 to “Planet Clare” by the B-52's for my Oasis showdown with Rodney.

Can you name off all the tricks in your routine? Looks like a nollie pressure flip a few tricks before the FS pop shove.

Naming the tricks is the easy part. Whether I am skating switch or not is a lot harder to tell. I kick turn goofy-footed so that makes me look goofy. Count how many times I am doing tricks regular-footed. People were impressed that I could do so many tricks “switch.” Except for Rodney. He was the only one that noticed how messed up I was. He once famously yelled, “That’s not switch! He can’t even do it the other way!” Best insult ever!

When did you first see Rodney skate?
I had seen Rodney skate at the Oceanside contest when he was around 12. I was a judge in the contest and remember it well because one of the guys he beat was my brother Anthony. After the contest I was trying to learn fakie Ollie to tail on the stadium steps and he came up to me. He couldn't really talk that well back then. He sort of barked when he was happy. Thus the real origin of his Mutt nickname. But he was, as he is now, very soft spoken and polite. Four years later, when I skated against Rodney in the 1982 Magic Mountain contest I pretty much gave up freestyle and only street skated. Rodney was still scared to kick flip off a curb back then.

Who else competed in this Berkeley contest?

Dan Ewell, who was considered to be the top skater in Northern California got second.

How did you find this new footage?
I got a text from Tony Guerrero (Not Tommy). It actually started at the SHoF (Skateboarding Hall of Fame). I was standing with Natas (Kaupas) and Tony came up and showed us a small part of the video where I am doing a Casper and, unbeknownst to me, a 15-year-old Tony was doing the same trick. So I asked Natas to judge which one was better. He picked mine. Later Tony joked that Natas insulted him. Actually, Natas was probably trying to insult me but picked the wrong one. Anyway I would like to personally thank Tony for taking the time to dig this up and send it to me. It meant a lot.

When did you notice the FS pop shove?

When I got the full video. I was having lunch with Guy Mariano. I had never seen this video before and Guy wanted to see it. So we watched it and he asked me what year it was filmed. When I told him 1978 his first reaction was, “Oh my God, I didn’t know you were better than Rodney!” To be fair I told him Rodney was only 12 the time. And I think Guy might have been barely out of diapers so he wouldn’t have been around for that. Ronnie Creager’s reaction was even better.

On a separate note, we had some very serious news last week too. We lost Marc Johnson. You and Rodney were obviously close to Marc during the A-team/enjoi years and he always credited you with the humor he wanted to bring to his own companies (enjoi, Back 40, Business & Company). Can you give me your thoughts on Marc and what he brought to skateboarding?

Rodney was a lot closer to Marc than me. And the news hit him pretty hard. I texted him right after it happened because I was a bit worried about him. I do remember vividly some of his early ads on enjoi and actually laughing out loud. Thinking “Oh my God! Marc is brilliant!” I really had no idea he credited me with any of that. And I doubt anything I can say is enough to do Marc justice. But I will leave you with this. When I texted Rodney that night, I wrote, “I hope he is in a better place now. If there is a Heaven he certainly deserves a place there.” Rodney replied, “He certainly does deserve a place.” One not need look beyond the quote “The praise of the praiseworthy is above all reward.” So indeed this must be what Marc brought to skateboarding. —Steve Rocco
