There's no question that skateboarding is frustrating. It even makes you throw your board in disgust. But mostly it drives you to stand on it once again, overcome the mental barriers, seek that moment of clarity, and roll away satisfied. When these fractions of a second are captured on film for others to see and admire, it becomes something else-inspiration. But when your peers recognize your skill and achievement, it becomes an honor, and it's about time you won an award.
Two days after TransWorld SKATEboarding's sixth annual awards in Hollywood, California, Marc Johnson left a voice mail for our Editor In Chief Skin Phillips saying that he'd lost his globe award for winning Best Street Skater-something he never expected to win. The globe was found, but you can read the story about it in his interview.
The photos in the awards article are amazing in their own right, but it doesn't capture the overall camaraderie that enveloped the Henry Fonda Theater that night. Danny Way received a standing ovation for his Best Video Part and Best Vert Skater awards and was given props by Mike Carroll during Girl's Best Video acceptance speech.
The awards night came to a climax when Steve Caballero was introduced by friend and ex-Bones Brigader Lance Mountain for the Legendary Achievement Award. Another standing ovation was in order to aknowledge Cab's significant contribution to skateboarding-he's skated in the past four decades. It was a night that made you feel good about being a skater-kind of like when you roll away satisfied.-Eric Sentianin
