Ryan Johnson Interview

Ryan JohnsonOut of nowhere. Bat out of hell.

With all the hype around the millennium, do you think something will happen on New Year's Eve 1999? Yeah. I think a lot of changes are going to come about, but I think I'm going to have to stop sending love letters to Ulysse Soto and signing them Newanda.

Any other changes you perceive? I'm studying computers, and I think the extent of what's going to happen we even don't know.

What do you have planned for New Year's Eve 1999? I like to live my life by the seat of my pants. I'm a social butterfly. I'll just be with the people I love, and I love everyone.

Who are the most important skaters of the 90s? People like Bob Burnquist, John Cards. You got people like Tim Brauch, Phil Shao, Dan Drehobol, Mark Gonzales, Alan Petersen, Karma Tsocheff, Justin Strubing has got a great style. Geoff Rowley, Pat Duffy, Jesse Paez, Diego Buccheri, Andrew Reynolds, Tom Penny. I just ran into Tom in France, he's doing good. He was at the contest.

Who is Alan Gelfand? I've heard the name. I'm not sure, though.

He's the guy who invented the ollie. Oh ... yeah. He did at a pool ... he did it at a skatepark somewhere. I've seen the footage.

How do you want to go down in skateboarding's history? Wait a second, was that a question - do you know who that is? And I said that, shit.

It's all right. I'm not going to look like an idiot 'cause I didn't know.

No. That's really a question ... that sucks. I hate myself. I'm supposed to be a skateboarder.

It's cool, now you'll never forget. Anyway, how do you want to go down in skateboarding's history?

There's more to it than just being known as being good. I want to be known as also having a positive attitude. When everyone's cool, everyone can flow with a good vibe.

Who do you think will change skateboarding in the future? A lot of Brazialians are so rad out there. I'd like to say Bob Burnquist again, Lincoln Ueda, Diego Bucherri, Donny Barley, Arto Saari, John Cardiel, Chad Bartie.
