Anthology
You don't even have to know what the word Anthology means, just knowing that it's the new TransWorld video by Jon Holland and Greg Hunt should get you hyped. It's the "best of" taken from ten different videos! That's only the first hint at how hot it's gonna get. There's also new footage. So, you know, if this is a compilation of the best footage from ten videos' worth of skating, anything else that they want to add is gonna be just as tight, or tighter, right?
So with that in mind, don't be surprised to see footage that you've glued your eyes to before, but have been jonzin' to see again. And don't be surprised to see new footage that's destined for that same category. In a way, this video is the missing link to footage that we've all seen at times, but never all at the same time. You'll see what I'm saying. So even if you own all ten videos so far, it's time to go one deeper. Anthologize yourself, suckers. ¿"Tell ya what I think" Loveless
Blueprint Skateboards
Waiting For The World
The opening montage to Blueprint's latest video, Waiting For The World, is like nothing you'll see this year¿flashing visuals matched with printed statements encourage you to laugh at authority and motivate your friends. The running order of skaters goes like this: Scott Palmer, Andres Holguin, Nick Jensen, tech-wizard Paul Shier, assorted ams and friends (Joel Curtis stands out), Sheffield's Mark Baines, Paul Carter (whose part is all too small due to breaking his pelvis), Channon King, Carl Shipman, Colin Kennedy, a collage of skateboarding inside some of the U.K.'s rain havens, and last (but in no way least) is John Rattray, who's put together the most talked-about part of the summer. It's hard to fault this video when you realize what skaters are up against in Britain, where weather and lack of terrain make it a challenge to get any kind of footage. To come up with something as polished as Waiting For The World deserves all the credit it's recently gotten.¿Skin
Gapor Delay
Jim Houser rips. He's a skateboarder who lives in Philadelphia and paints colorful little cartoon-esque pieces full of hard-to-decipher social commentary. His art's appeared everywhere from gallery walls to the bottoms of skateboards, and in the past few years his stuff has become some of the more recognizable images in skateboarding.
From November 10 through December 8, Philadelphia's Spector Gallery will be hosting Gapor Delay, Jim's second-ever solo show. Spector will be full of our man's work, including some collaborative pieces he's done with artists Rebecca Westcott, Ed Templeton, and Barry McGee. If you're in Philly, we highly recommend you drop by and check it out.¿Joel
Spector is located at 510 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147. Shelley Spector runs the gallery, and she can be reached at (215) 238-0840. You can check out some of Jim's work on Spector's Web site at www.spectorspector.com.
The A-team got peaced-out, so Marc Johnson gave himself a promotion and is Rodney Mullen's new boss. Enjoi is Marc's new company, and the current crew consists of Rodney Mullen, Dave Mayhew, Jerry Hsu, and amateurs Louie Barletta and Jose Rojo. In addition to making Rodney do triple kickflips all day, Marc is going to do much of the artwork, so the graphics should be interesting.
Coincidentally, Gershon Mosley jumped from the sunken A-team rowboat to land on the Blind skateboards hovercraft. Gersh can now kick it with Blind teammates Ronnie Creager, Josh Kasper, Gideon Choi, James Craig, and Corey Sheppard.
With some "kind of old, but now official" news, Jim Greco has "kicked himself off" Zero. This has apparently sent Jim on a handrail killing spree, and his first victim was a camera-confirmed ten-stair backside nosebluntslide. There's no word yet if there is, or is not, a new company that might be called Piss Drunx, or might not be called Baker Boards.
In other handrail-destruction news, we st recieved this e-mail from secret agent Gee Money: "Yo! I just got back shooting photos with Tosh Townend. That kid just went up to a thirteen-stair rail and feebled and crookzed it first try! Arto is on a mission for the weekend, they're bustin' some insane shit!" Go ahead and check out ryangee.com if you want some more Gee flavor. Oh yeah, shortly after we received this e-mail, Tosh decided to feeble grind the twenty-stair El Toro rail. Can somebody please give that kid a cookie?
Jake Nunn and Veith Kilbert have turned pro for Think, and the name of the mystery am has also been released. His name is Danny "The Chilean Prince" Fuenzalida, and he's made the trek to live in San Francisco. Sacramento am Stefan Janoski has been added to the Planet Earth team. Darkstar Wheels has announced the additions of professional rider Toan Nguyen and amateurs Jason Masse and Gailea Momolu. Check out darkstarwheels.com to see bios on the complete Darkstar team, along with footage and product info. There's also another new wheel company in the works¿Satori. The Satori family includes Steve Olson, Karl Watson, Ed Selego, Matt Pailes, Tony Cox, and ams Jacob Rupp, Aj Mazzu, Craig Nejedly, and Lucian Moon. And just so you know, "Satori is the inner, intuitive experience of enlightenment through skateboarding ..."
September saw the opening of the world's largest skatepark in Perris, California. Real Ride Skatepark is a 100,000-square-foot facility located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds, with half of the park housed indoors. For more information, call Real Ride at: (909) 943-5744.
The much-anticipated éS video now officially has a name¿Menik Mati. We don't know what it means either, but we want to see some Koston, Arto, Creager, and McCrank footage really bad. If we're lucky, Menik Mati might be premiering in November. The F.O.R.E. And Friends video is coming soon. It's going to be a full-length video featuring a lot of Forrest "Fore" Kirby and cameo appearances from all his friends from Rhythm, Planet Earth, Alphanumeric, East Coast, and West. There's still no word on when the Flip video is dropping, but heads are already talking about Bastien Salabanzi. This fifteen-year-old kid from France destroys everything he skates, and Guy Mariano Video Days comparisons are being called out.
Brad Staba and Brian Anderson are sporting a new shoe sponsor called Savier. Apparently, Savier just did it and is hyping their "technology agreement" with Nike that gives them access to footwear material and production. Hopefully Savier is smarter than Nike, who's first skate shoe was called "The Choad" and looked like elephant poop with shoelaces.
Someone who used to skate for Nike, Bam Margera, has joined the Electric sunglasses team with Colin McKay, Kerry Getz, and Lincoln Ueda. This means Bam can get sunglasses for free and not care when Bran punches him in the face and breaks them. Oh yeah, don't be surprised if you see Bam and his hilarious posse on MTV, either. Spike Jonze and crew are finishing up a show called Jackass which is rumored to be like one big out-of-control CKY video. Jackass should be airing in October, jackass. And since we're talking about skateboarders who are going to be famous millionaires, Jason Lee is playing a dirty hippie rock star in the new movie Almost Famous, and Tony Hawk's autobiography Occupation: Skateboarder is on the New York Times Bestseller list.
To add just a bit more Bling Bling news, Matt Hensley defeated Tony Magnussun at the inaugural Arcade Pool Tournament to walk away with 1,000 bucks, and word on the street is that the entire DC skate team all received custom, iced-out, DC logo diamond rings valued at about a grand each. What, no DC Rolexes?
On Saturday, August 26, Etnies and Oakley presented the second annual Put Up or Shut Up basketball tournament. Eric Koston made a valiant effort along with Girl team members Rick Howard, Jason Calloway, and Kelly Bird. But in the end Blackline took home the 3,000-dollar prize, with Active placing second, Hurley third, and Split fourth. The event raised over 4,000 dollars for the Children's Hospital of Orange County (C.H.O.C.), because it's all about the kids. And speaking of kids, Mike Frazier is now the father of a nine-pound, eight-ounce boy. Congratulations Mike!
On a final note, in our December 2000 issue (Volume 18, Number 12) we ran an interview with Laban Pheidias entitled "Holding On To The Dream?" in which the subject talked about a video he's working on involving hip-hop and skateboarding. In the process of transcribing the interview tape (every editor's favorite task) the name of the video magically changed from its real name Undastand to the solicism On The Stand. Sorry Laban.
A New Horizon
One of the best things about the world of skateboarding videos today is that they no longer exist merely to hype an individual company's roster of athletes. The majority of videos I find myself making time to watch are done by independent filmers¿they're done to showcase talent and not to sell product (other than the video itself!). That alone makes these types of videos "where it's at" when it comes to investing your ducats, and A New Horizon is no exception.
On this journey, Bill Keller (producer) and Mark Nisbet (director) take you deep into the Los Angeles area's urban arena of skateboard warfare, and you know how those kids in L.A. get ... tech as f¿k. Whether it's flip-in you're after, or flip-out, this video is gonna get it done. Not to say that no one's going big, 'cause they are, but overall jiggy is the stiggy. If you don't believe me, and even if you do, check it for yourself. A New Horizon ... find yours!¿"Ain't that right?" Loveless

Everyone enroll at Chico State!
California State University at Chico has added a new special-topic P.E. class to its course catalog. Beginning this fall semester the school will offer a class dedicated entirely to skateboarding. Undergraduate senior and longtime skateboarder Marcus Dorin designed the curriculum and is teaching this unique college course.
The class will touch briefly on the history of skateboarding, cover the great videos and legendary skaters of the past 25 years, provide one-on-one instruction, and even feature guest pros throughout the semester. Dorin spent his own money to build the mini ramp and street course, but Chico State did provide the land and insurance for the class. So with a product donation from Santa Cruz, TSG, Krux, and Accel. worth about 2,800 dollars, Dorin can offer the students in his class complete skateboards at ten percent above wholesale and still help offset the building costs he's incurred.
Since it's a class that actually counts towards college credit, students will have to write three one-page papers, take quizzes, and know pro skaters from the past three decades. Students are encouraged to skate anything and everything, and will even be rewarded with extra credit for receiving a skateboarding ticket from a law enforcement officer. What encouragement! Everyone, enroll in college now, skateboarding is part of the curriculum.
Seeing is believing, so check it out for yourself at csuchico.edu/schedule/SC00F, where it's listed under "Special Topics in P.E."¿Eric Sentianin
