BrigadeBasic Training
Brigade skateboards has just released their latest project demonstrating some of skateboarding's primary maneuvers. Mimic Danny Wainwright's world-record pop, and before you know it you'll be ollieing over trees. Examine the technique of Paul Machnau closely, and you'll crooked grind a seventeen-stair rail, no worries¿well, maybe not. But the techniques demonstrated are definitely helpful in mastering the basics. Take your new bag of tricks, invade the best spot in town, and impress your friends.
Cliché Europa
"This will just be some boring Europe vid." That's what I thought, and well, I'm really stupid. Cliché Europa f¿king rips! Mainly because it's got what most vids lack¿originality. Skatespots that haven't been killed, music that hasn't been recycled, and skaters that step to anything and don't let that rough-ass European pavement fade them. Vincent Bressol tears ledges to pieces, Pontus Alv gets creative with some crazy terrain, Jeremie Daclin charges some gnarly rails, and that's only a couple of the kids in this video. Just throw this shit in your VCR and it will definitely be on heavy rotation.¿Shad
Mandatory Info
During the past few years, women like Cara-Beth Burnside, Elissa Steamer, Jen O'Brien, Jamie Reyes, Jessie Van Roechoudt, and a few others have opened the door to sponsorship for fellow females. Cnaan Omer (who's a girl) is now an official member of the Santa Cruz Skateboards team.
Tony Tieu no longer skates for Santa Cruz Skateboards. According to an NHS press release, Tony and Santa Cruz parted on "good terms," and it looks like for now Tony will return to school full-time in February. We wish him all the best. While we're on the topic of parting ways, Oceanside, California-resident Jon Comer is no longer riding for Jimmy'Z.
Canadian Mark Appleyard has moved from Burlington, Ontario (home of comedian Jim Carey) to Huntington Beach, California and where he's now riding for Volcom. Stacy Lowery joins Mike Taylor and Damian Smith as the third Santa Cruz skater to also ride for Duffs shoes. Stacy will have a part in an upcoming Duffs video to be released this fall. Satori's newest team additions are Quim Cardona and Pat Washington. Damian Bravo joins Mike York, Gino Iannucci, Daniel Castillo, and Eric Bork on Freshjive Clothing. Real Skateboards is said to be filming daily for a video to be released soonish. Kenny Anderson is now pro for Adio shoes and is currently filming for the company's new vid, One Step Beyond.
On a sad note, Jose Gonzalez Gonzalez, the owner of the pool featured in last month's pool-skating feature (April 2001 TWSkate), passed away at the age of 78 in Los Angeles on December 15, 2000. Gonzalez had been a character actor in the early days of Hollywood and his pool played host to more than one raging pool session. Thanks Jose.World Cup Skateboarding is in the works on a much-needed series of amateur skateboard contests. IASC's Jim Fitzpatrick and Don and Danielle Bostick are in the process of organizing and confirming a schedule, which should be set by February. For more information, contact World Cup Skateboarding at www.wcsk8.com.
On a final note, this is the final issue for TransWorld Editor of over six years Joel Patterson. Author of hundreds of features, columns, music reviews, captions, and Gasbags, Joel tried his hardest to contribute positively to the lifestyle that gave him so much love and so much grief. Joel's gone to work as the editor-in-chief of TransWorld SURF. Good luck, Joel. Only one question remains: Who will Dave Carnie pick on now?

Skate Slang
Creepers¿Photographers, filmers, or freaks who creep into a shoot. "That photo would have been sick if it wasn't for the creepers."
Donk¿An ugly trick, usually one that bounces off the ground or is sketchy. "That shit was donk."
Sorry, bro!¿Game played at skateparks where you "accidentally" knock over scooters and Rollerbladers. "Sorry, bro! I just didn't see you. Let me help you find that missing tooth."
Ass-knife¿When you bail your board and it goes between your legs and stabs your ass. "Ahhhhh! I just got ass-knifed! I think I'm bleeding!"
Barrel¿Fat chick. "Dude, that barrel is starting to look pretty cute."
Barreled¿Hooking up with a fat chick. "Dude, I got barreled last night."

2001: A Skate Odyssey
World Cup Skateboarding has announced its official schedule for 2001, and what a busy year it's going to be. According to the schedule, WCS will host or participate in seventeen major events this year, not including a series of amateur contests that are still in the planning phase (see Mandatory Information). We've decided to reproduce the schedule and make some brief comments about each contest because a.) we're hurting for Tangent stuff, and b.) some of these events are definitely worth checking out.¿J.P.
March 15¿18Tampa ProSkatePark of Tampa, Tampa, Florida
The Tampa Pro is one of the best contests of all-time. Park Owner Brian Schaefer keeps threatening to move the park to a big new warehouse in the suburbs, so you might want to check SPoT out before it gets all high-class.
March 23¿25B3Edison Field, Anaheim, California
B3 stands for Bikes, Blades, and Boards, or something stupid like that.
April 20¿22B3Waterfront, Louisville, Kentucky
The Waterfront area of Louisville is supposed to be pretty bitchen, which might make Rollerblading slightly more tolerable.
May 4¿6Slam City Jam VIIIFirst Leg of the Vans Triple CrownVancouver, British Columbia, Canada
The Slam City Jam is the best skateboard contest because it satisfies the three Ls of contest planning: location, location, location. With unlimited skateable terrain, a red-ight district, and good Indian restaurants, Vancouver is fun. Plus McCrank and Chalmers go mental because they have Canada Power.
May 18¿20X-TrialsLone Star Park, Grand Prairie, Texas
The X-Trials are contests designed as feeder events to the X-Games. We have historically ignored stuff with the letter X in the title because it's considered antiquated by everyone except the people who work for ESPN. You should probably attend the X-contests in person, because for a plethora of reasons the skateboard press pretty much ignores them.
June 1¿3Location TBASecond Leg of the Vans Triple Crown
As of the date of publication of this magazine, WCS hadn't yet decided on a venue for stop number two of the Vans Triple Crown series.
June 7¿10Soul BowlHermosa Beach, California
The Soul Bowl contest is different. WCS builds this huge bowl near the beach and usually includes a Masters competition as well as a pro. Bowl contests are cool because they bring out guys like Remy Stratton and Peter Hewitt, who don't make it into the magazines too much these days.
June 15¿17X-TrialsBristol, Connecticut
See the write-up on the May 18¿20 Lone Star Park X-Trials.
Europe 2001
June 22¿24Copenhagen World Cup 2001Copenhagen, Denmark
There's a part of Copenhagen called Free Town where drugs are legal. Enough said.
June 30¿July 1Globe Shoes World CupDortmund, Germany
We've made lots of fun of Germans in our magazine, but we have to admit that the Globe Shoes World Cup in Dortmund is something to be a part of at least once. It's like being at Wimbledon, minus the tennis, all-white outfits, and the Queen.
July 5¿8Glissexpo FestivalBiarritz, France
Glissexpo Festival is a Euro-style trade show fully equipped with gorgeous French women, techno, a skate contest, some more techno, and sand.
July 13¿15Mystic Skate CupPrague, Czech Republic
A lot of people think it's still called Czechoslovakia, but they're wrong. Prague isn't known for its numerous street spots, but the beer is good and cheap.
August 17¿23X-GamesPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania
Rumor of a revival of freestyle bungee kayaking this year has sent hotel-room prices skyrocketing in Philly. We love the X-Games!
August 25¿26Concrete ChallengeAspen, Colorado
Concrete-only contest set in Richpeopleville.
September 1¿9Gravity GamesProvidence, Rhode Island
The Gravity Games are a sort of X-Games rip-off perpetrated by one of the Big Three.
September (date TBA)Team ChallengeLos Angeles County FairLos Angeles, California
The Team Challenge is a contest with a good concept: Girl versus Shorty's, Alien versus Black Label, Zoo York versus Rookie, etc. Just remember that it's attached to the L.A. Fair, so don't wear any red or blue bandannas, holmes.
