High On FireThe Art Of Self-DefenseMan's Ruin Records
Guitarist Matt Pike is a f¿kin' hessian. I know this because I've seen High On Fire play live, and he's as greasy and grimy as a human could possibly be. The way he was positioned in front of his Green full-stack was rock and roll in a nutshell¿pure slaying. They played so loud my ears were still ringing the next morning¿I shit you not, these dudes play loud!
After each show, Matt always comes out and talks with everyone¿he's such a bro. He's a rock workhorse who's been touring nonstop and putting his heart into each show like it's his last. It's definitely been taking a toll on Matt¿evidently due to his eroded voice and endless chain-smoking. He told me he used to play with his old band in Steve Caballero's warehouse in San Jose, California. He said they'd set up by the vert ramp and play endlessly into the early morning with all the vert dogs flying around them.
For those who don't know, Matt used to play guitar for the legendary kings of sludge, Sleep. And if you don't know about Sleep, it was basically early Sabbath times ten. High On Fire is the answer to your heavy-rock hunger.¿Aaron Schmidt
Tommy Guerrero & GadgetHoy Yen Ass'nFunction 8
I unexpectedly ran across this CD last night, having no idea when it came out. Tommy Guerrero and Gadget have put together this groove-heavy soundtrack for the moments. The vibes had me recalling everything from rainy-day bus rides to the beach, to the meditation that comes with bombing a hill, thinking of everything and nothing at once. If you're looking for something to bring you back to level with yourself, look no further than Hoy Yen Ass'n. The straight beats surprised me at first, but the groove pulled it together in true T.G. fashion. Do yourself a favor: find this CD and chill. As a matter of fact, you should get all the man's CDs.¿Scotty Too Hotty
