The F¿king ChampsIVDrag City RecordsOnce upon a time, I fell off my skateboard, and it hit an ugly stoner girl in the ankle. Her boyfriend, Whiplash, proceeded to rip off his Judas Priest shirt and "went mosh pit" on our launch ramp. Our ramp was undamaged, but Whiplash's hands were a swollen bloody pile of goo. Something tells me that nowadays Whiplash is using his bloody stumps to put The F¿king Champs in his Camaro and rock the f¿k out.¿Shad

DidoNo AngelAristaYou know that song on Eminem's last album? The dee-dah-dah-dah-dee-dah-dah-dah one with the girl singing all pretty in the background? I know you do. Well, I recently got fished into buying the solo album of the girl whose voice that is¿Dido. While I wasn't expecting lyrics about doing drugs and killing bitches, I most certainly wasn't expecting the album to suck as bad as it does. I mean, it's basically a bunch of sad love songs, that if listened to enough times, will make you want to kill yourself like the guy in the aforementioned Eminem track does. I paid $13.99 for this album at 6:00 p.m. and got five dollars back for it at 8:00 p.m. when I returned it to the same store where I bought it. I got burned. Try not to make the same mistake.¿Bob Kronbauer
Guru's JazzmatazzStreetsoulVirginIn the mid 90s, Guru dropped Jazzmatazz Volumes I and II: two albums that introduced a new genre, "an experimental fusion of hip-hop and jazz," to the world. The albums were full of swingin' tracks that you'd hear in skate videos¿real upbeat stuff. Streetsoul (Jazzmatazz Volume III) again brings hip-hop and jazz together, but on a way mellower tone. "I want people to make love to this," says Guru. "I want some kids to be born offa this."I've been enjoying the sounds of this album and look forward to making love to it real soon, but if I had to complain about something, it'd be the amount of props Guru gives himself throughout the entire thing. We know you're dope, down, legit, pimpin', for realz, and bonafide, dawg. You don't gotta keep telling us, though.¿Bob
Talib Kweli & Hi TekReflection EternalRawkusIt's good ... it's good. Rawkus records brings you another tight album with the anticipated Talib Kweli and DJ Hi Tek¿Reflection Eternal. After the drop of the Black Star LP featuring Talib Kweli and Mos Def, people were definitely wanting to here more from these two. Mos Def then dropped his solo album that definitely lived up to expectations, but what of the other half of Black Star, the one with the hard-to-pronounce name? What was his solo LP gonna sound like? The first thing you notice listening to Reflection Eternal is that Talib and Hi-Tek pick up where Black Star ended. The production is A-plus. It definitely had me and my crew rockin' to the CD in my car. Talib's delivery was solid all the way through. But on top of everything, they had a lot of support via cameos and guest vocals. An intro by Nelson Mandela and production by Rick James??? And appearances by Mos Def, De La Soul, Xzibit, Rah Digga, and Kool G Rap keep your on your toes with ierestingly diverse flows. Reflection Eternal makes you feel like it was recorded with entire family support. And on the promo copy they had full support from a guy shouting, "Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek promo in stores October!" over every track, sometimes twice. He might as well be the third member of the crew the way he was trying to come off ... but oh yeah, the album is slammin¿go get it!I give it 3.5 Ks out of a possible five.¿Kanten Russell
Medeski Martin & WoodCombusticationBlue NoteThis album's been out for a while, so don't get freaked out if you're all current on music. I didn't review it when it came out because it just seemed like another promotional CD in an inexplicably long procession of bullshit music we're sent on a daily basis. So it sat in a pile at TransWorld, then I took it home, where it sat in another pile of music I wish would go away. Then, by accident, I saw MM&W play live, and I was blown away.In a day of musicians with gimmicks¿fake boobs, side jobs as porno starts, guest appearances on Ally McBeal, or whatever¿it's refreshing to see a real jazz trio dressed in T-shirts and jeans get crazy. And crazy they got. So I went to see them at their next stop, and they got crazy again. When I returned home, I took the CD out of the "f¿k off to Lou's" stack, and it blew me away. I felt somehow partially repaid for all the hours of my life I've lost forever while listening to crappy, prepackaged flavors of the week.¿Joel
GodsmackAwakeRepublicI wonder why the guys from Alice Chains just don't kick these Godsmack guys' asses. First of all, they started as an Alice In Chains cover band that played dive bars, then they somehow, (God, please tell me how) got signed and actually released. Who knows if the guys in this band are cool or not, but they suck. They're a Alice In Chains rip-off, and they're such Alice In Chains wannabes that they named their band after an A.I.C. song. Godsmack sucks.¿C.C.
The Drastic Jungle ProjectHip Hop Meets Drum 'n' BassInsomniac, Inc.Looking for a jungle CD to put on when your party starts to jam its way into the early hours? Looking for a CD to put on when you and your roommate have a couple of cute raver chicks over to your apartment? The Drastic Jungle Project is the best fusion of jungle and hip-hop in a long time. There's some damn good rhyme slingers on this disc, like Bahamadia, Zion I, Joeyquoatable, and the legendary Kool Kieth. Go buy some baggy-ass pants and some glow sticks, and get weird.¿C.C.
The Good LifeNovena on a NocturnBetter LookingHere's some really nice indie-chill-rock that's great for any occasion where chilling is warranted. The Good Life is one of those bands that likes to play music for foggy afternoons and late-night drives. The singer has a cool, low voice that massages your brain. This is a somewhat sad CD, but it'll make you happy because it's very pretty and spacey. If you like Radiohead, Jimmy Eat World, or Jets To Brazil, you'll like The Good Life. Take some money out of the ATM machine, go to an independent-record store, and buy this disc, please.¿C.C.
PennywiseLive @ the Key ClubEpitaphIf you've never been to a Pennywise show, then you won't have any idea how much energy these shows produce. So what if half the crowd is wearing wife-beaters and chain wallets? So what if you get your face punched in the mosh pit? Pennywise shows are not for sitting in a chair clapping, they're for getting sweaty and running around smashing into things. Pennywise are punk-rock mainstays who not only own the game, they kick the game's ass. Jim, Fletcher, Randy, and Byron are all legends, and they've been supporting skate, snow, and surf since they were formed way back in the day. Put your speakers outside and have a mosh pit in your backyard.¿C.C.
T.V. Eye Video MagazineIssue #1 Summer 2000Alpha Stare ProductionsIt's about time someone came out with a video documenting the underground heavy-rock scene. The thought-provoking editing flows perfectly over the live music of Nebula, Queens Of The Stone Age, High On Fire (the heaviest band since Sleep), Unida, Goatsnake, Drunk Horse, and Lost Goat. If you're not familiar with this scene, this shit will definitely give you an eye-opening new perspective on rock and f¿kin' roll. I'm looking forward to seeing the next release from T.V. Eye, and after you view Issue #1, you will, too.¿Aaron Schmidt
DioMagicaSpitfire RecordsRonnie James Dio is throwin' up devil horns as we speak. From his days with Black Sabbath (I don't care how much you like Dio, nobody replaces Ozzy, period), to his countless solo efforts, this metal workhorse is still alive and kicking ass. Magica is really organ-heavy with driving, metal riffs on every track. I like this new release from Ronnie James, but I have to admit this: I never bought any Sabbath albums with him singing. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.¿A.S.
MinutemenDouble Nickels On The DimeSST RecordsThe Minutemen are one of the most innovative, influential, and progressive punk-rock bands to ever create music. Their raw style, together with D. Boon's chicken-scratch guitar, Mike Watt's thundering bass, and George Hurley's driving drums, will hit you with a wall of sound and knock you into the San Pedro harbor with classics like "This Ain't No Picnic," "Jesus and Tequila," and "Maybe Partying Will Help." This album released in 1984 is timeless, so stop listening to that other crap and have a listen.¿Eric Sentianin
