Bad Memory: Rodney Mullen gets a gun in the face for littering
|TransWorld Skateboarding
It was back in the summer of 1991. We had just bought a new tour van-it was black with rims and tinted glass. Kareem Campbell, Tim Gavin, Henry Sanchez, Randy Colvin, Gabriel Rodriguez, Chris Brannah, Guy Mariano, and I were in Connecticut. It was night, and we'd just finished skating a demo. The guys wanted to eat at Taco Bell, but I didn't want to, so I dropped them off and went to a grocery store down the street. When I returned, the guys had thrown their trash everywhere. There... The Buddy System: Steve Berra and Eric Koston are good friends who rarely skate together
|TransWorld Skateboarding
Walk into any Hallmark store and you'll find a row of cards oozing with sentimental goo about the beautiful bond of friendship. As pathologically sentimental as they are, they've got the fundamentals down-friendship is good. You can hang out with your bro; go to movies; take skate trips; talk about girl problems; play pool, cards, video games; whatever turns your crank. That's what makes Koston and Berra's friendship puzzling: they hardly do any of the "friend" activities together. Rather than two friends heading in the same direction, or making Three Musketeer... Read more...
Favorites: Geoff Rowley names his favorite video part
|TransWorld Skateboarding
It's definitely Jeremy Wray's part in Second Hand Smoke. His skating was gnarly, and the quality of his skating is so good all the way through-there's no weak stuff. It's hard to film a whole part like that. His stuff was so gnarly. The first time I saw it was in a skate shop somewhere in America. I was on tour and watched it with Tom Penny-he thought it was great as well. It's still good because videos on the whole, well, a lot of them aren't very good. It's pretty... Read more...
Peter Smolik Interview
|TransWorld Skateboarding
"It's funny, say you meet a girl and she's like, 'What do you do?' I just skate. 'Where do you go to school?' I don't go to school. I try to explain it to her, and if she's simpleminded, she'll think, 'Oh, you're stupid, you're not going to get anywhere.' She doesn't understand. So I don't even try to think how anyone else thinks. I just try to think about coming up and being original."Say your name, Peter. Ol' Dirty Smolik. How old are you? Twenty years old. When's your birthday? November... Read more...

E-mail us at: dave@twsnet.comMORE MONGO Hey, what's up with all this mongo pride crap that's increasingly littering the Litterbox pages in TransWorld? Before all the stupid-ass mongos start to pull their pens and paper out to respond by saying, "What would you know, you stupid back-foot pusher?" I would just like to state that I too was once a mongo footer. I was also proud of it, until I got wise and started pushing with my back foot.... Read more...

Fugazi Southern man Neil Brown talks to hardcore legend Ian MacKaye about eggings and playing in churches. On a recent trip up the East Coast, I was lucky enough to see Fugazi perform twice in their hometown, Washington D.C. The following interview with the band's front man Ian MacKaye was conducted a few days following the Fort Reno and Cavalry Church shows.-N.B."Fugazi, Fort Reno, July 30, 1998" read the tour calendar. Fort Reno? "What a strange name for a club," I thought. When I arrived in D.C., I called information to... Read more...
Josh Kalis Good Stuff
|TransWorld Skateboarding
by Ryan GeeWhen I think of Josh Kalis a few words come to mind: professional, precise, and nice. Back in September 1997, just after Josh moved back to Philadelphia, he gave me a call to see if I wanted to shoot some photos of him for an ad. The day we went out skating I couldn't believe what I saw. This was the first time I'd seen him skate. He landed every trick with such a unique style. Some of the stuff he was doing I couldn't even comprehend.Josh is... Read more...
Pat Channita Good Stuff
|TransWorld Skateboarding
by Jeremy WrayPat Channita is a Taurus. He can't help it.Because he was born under the sign of the bull, he was doomed to become powerful, successful, practical, dependable, consistent, determined, proud, quiet, stable, and strong. It is written that he will be inspired by art and music, and since Taurus is the sign of property and money, he has also been cursed with the fate of material power and wealth. But before you think that everything is all too cozy in this wonderland, let me warn you that Taurus people... Anyone Fancy A Pint? Changes in 1999

by Joel PattersonI root for Manchester United. I drink Guinness. I understand the relation between the stopper, the sweeper, and the keeper. I know the Spurs don't only play in San Antonio. I can use the phrase "tracky bottoms" in a sentence. I know how I take my tea. I can hum the tune that accompanies the lyric "Come and have a go, if you think you're hard enough." I know the locations of the following places: the bog, the Vetch, the Mumbles, and Old Trafford. I read When Saturday... Read more...
Europe '98: In pursuit of the other World Cup
|TransWorld Skateboarding
by Joel PattersonBetween the dates July 24 and August 2, 1998 there was only one day that didn't feature a professional skateboarding contest. The events were held back east directly following three straight weeks of European competition. We know how exciting contest articles are, but we simply ran out of steam after Europe. So as skateboarding's contestfest raged for nearly 216 uninterrupted hours in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey, we had to sit it out. Luckily for us, we have contributing photographers lurking everywhere (even rural Amish Pennsylvania), and... Read more...

Robbie McKinleyAge: 19Home: Santa Monica, CaliforniaSponsors: Blind, Hot Rod skate shopGrace, perfection, and style-these are just some of the words that come to mind when I watch Robbie McKinley skate. I first met Robbie when I was filming the Goldfish video in 1993. Back then he was quiet and shy, but when he stepped on his skateboard he would simply bust. Robbie skates with a unique passion that will turn the head of every skater at any given spot. On a skateboard, he has the talent to do anything he... Read more...
Bird In The Bullring: Birdhouse creates skateboarding surrealism in a Mexican bullring
|TransWorld Skateboarding
By Sean MortimerIt's definitely a surreal sight-like an indigestion-induced dream a skate rat tumbled through his imagination. How else would you explain a massive, fourteen-foot-high vert ramp standing square in the middle of a desolate bullring with the burning Mexican sun blazing down. Never mind the fact that Tony Hawk is whipping off insane tricks like twelve-foot-high McTwists and varial 720s. Forget the skating-what sense can be made of a short and very angry bull dropping in on the ramp and chasing Hawk? The only thing missing would be for... Read more...
