When it comes to skateboarding, Jason Carney is as real as they come. He's a San Diego skate legend and his influence on the culture is nothing short of admirable. He's a lifer in the truest sense, and these days, he gives back to the local scene through his skate shop, Slappy’s Garage, with locations in both downtown San Diego and Linda Vista.
In the latest installment of CORE, we get an in-depth look at Carney's journey, from his early days coming up in the game to his current day-to-day running the shops. He's still inspiring us all! Check it out:
Running a skate shop is no small task. It's hard. It's challenging. But at the same time, it's super rewarding. There might be more skateboarders out there these days than ever before—and honestly, more shops than ever—but that doesn't mean the struggle isn't real. Thanks a lot, Internet!
However, with all of that said, it's individuals like Carney who are out there on the frontlines keeping the dream alive. "That’s my purpose," he mentions. "To enable other people to live out their dreams.” And he's doing just that. If anyone is keeping the core skate shop vibes going, it's Jason. Take one step into either Slappy's location and you'll know what I mean.
Beyond skateboarding and running a business, Carney is just a solid dude. He genuinely cares about his people, his employees, his friends. He's there for them and is a huge part in letting them all live out their dreams, just like he was able to. It's really humbling.
I've been a fan of Carney for so long, and just when I thought I knew it all, I watched this and learned even more about this legend. We need more people like Jason in skateboarding. At the same time, we should all be stoked that he's such a significant part of the culture. If you haven't pressed play yet, get there.
Support your local skate shop! Keep the fire burning, Carney. Thanks for everything.
