Legendary photog J. Grant Brittain reflects on iconic 'Media Overkill' Transworld cover, tells the story

In my opinion, Grant Brittain is to skate photography what Tony Hawk is to skateboarding. You know their names, you know their work. They're legends. Pioneers.

I've said it before, but Grant's archive is out of control. Decades and decades of timeless moments frozen in time. He recently pulled out one of the most iconic Transworld covers and told the story of how it came to be. As always, it's informative and entertaining all the same.

"So, the story with this @jamiethomas photo is that we skate photogs were getting a bit perturbed by the Corpo Media Entities barging into our scene with their billions of dollars and pushing the skate mags and skate photographers into the Cattle Corrals at events," writes Grant. "Dave Swift had this idea and arranged to have everyone and his dog with a camera show up and show the Media Overkill. Boy, we showed them didn’t we? Oh, shut up Cry Baby skate photographer!"

It was no surprise seeing TWS alumni and respected photographer, Dave Swift in the comments either. Like Grant, he's seen a thing or two through the lens of his camera over the past few decades. He dropped a line saying, "'we sure showed them, didn’t we?' Well, unlike today, at least we tried (and we had the gift of satire). ❤️"

Such a different time in skateboarding. Was it more pure, or are we all just getting old? They say age is just a number, so...it was more pure. Ha!

Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Grant.
