Like skateboarding itself, pads and helmets have come along way since the early days of this wild activity we all love so much, and icons like Lance Mountain have been around to see it all evolve.
In the latest S1 Lifer Stories clip, Lance talks about the importance of safety these days and how the gear itself actually played a major role in progression over the years. "I don't know how many people try [900s] without helmets," he mentions. No argument here! Take a look:
“When we were young, safety wasn't a thing at all," Lance mentions. "The equipment got better. You could actually knee slide out of a move, so you could go twice as high. Now I want to remember things and I've hit my head so many times that I don't remember things. And so it's more important than it's ever been to me now if I'm gonna keep skating.”
For many skaters these days, it’s less about fear and more about longevity. It’s about being able to skate tomorrow, next week, next year—next decade. And if we should listen to anyone about a message like that, it's Lance.
