The Dern Brothers constantly pump out content that skateboarding enthusiasts of all ages can enjoy, and their 'Spot History' segment is no exception. In fact, it's one of my favs! A lot of hard work goes into these edits, and it shows.
They recently visited the iconic Manhattan Beach stairs and hubbas—a small stretch of coastal paradise that is absolutely drenched in skateboarding history—and take us on a deep dive through the eras. It's actually sort of insane how many legendary tricks have gone down here! What's your favorite? Welp, I bet you it's in here! Take a look:
Say what you will—and yeah, I know it’s kind of cliché—but Chad Muska’s tailslide on that 18-stair hubba is always the first trick that pops into my head when I think about clips from these spots. Guilty-era Muska was just different. I miss that dude! It was a time when I was young, fully immersed in skateboarding, and everything about it felt larger than life.
That said, any trick that has ever gone down on that hubba deserves some heavy props. I never realized how tall it was! Ryan Smith's 5050 from Dying to Live is another memorable one, and honestly, Dobstaff's five-0 180 out is one I'll always remember, too. Ha! My Subject to Change VHS was on heavy rotation as a kid.
Boo Johnson's tailslide on the 26-stair hubba was super buck! Wouldn't be right not to shine a little light on that. Has he really been the only one to step to that? Might be! Regardless, the view from the top looks terrifying. That spot is no joke. Yeah, Boo!
It's rad that they showed us a few other spots around the area as well, aside from the stairs and hubbas. This place is basically like a skatepark in the streets! Well, sort of. But your options are pretty endless, if you're a hubba/rail-chomper or a jumper.
Anyways, shoutout to the Dern Brothers for the little history lesson. That was rad. Anyone out there feel like bringing new life to this classic spot? Get there.
