The Skateboarding History of Encinitas, California's Gnarly City Hall Bank

Encinitas City Hall

Skateboarding's best writer, historian, and collector of #SkateNerdStarMaps, Mackenzie Eisenhour, has another deep dive down history lane. This time it's with Encinitas, California's looming white bank, sitting in plain view of anyone passing through the seaside hamlet. Of course we all saw it first in a Zero ad in Welcome to Hell thanks to Aaron Harrison. Mack started there: "A few weeks back I received some photos of an abandoned looking parking lot via DM from @hairball1974 on Instagram. @hairball1974 is Aaron Harrison’s account and that name is best known to me as one of the founding members of Zero – partially unveiled in Welcome to Hell (’96) then cemented in their first video, Thrill of it All. The lot in question was the former location in Vista, CA of the bent pole famously grinded by Wade Burkitt to close out his own part in that same video."

Mackenzie gets deeper with a lengthy interview with Harrison as well. He even posted up Wade Burkitt's classic Zero part, soundtrack issues withstanding.

Mackenzie himself was in Encinitas this past month and snapped a ton of current-day views of the behemoth. He even walked down the block and check out the classic small hip as seen in many videos in the early 90s.

As with any Mackenzie Eisenhour piece, it's worth a scroll all the way through. Shouts out to Zane Timpson (RIP) and Omar Salazar (Am Issue cover!) for finding their own way to hit the monster. And it's still showing up—just peep the new Zero video, Heaven's Gate!
