Trick Tip

1. Speed is important to grind through any trick. Smith grinds are no exception. Don’t be afraid to go a little faster than normal.

2. Once you’ve figured out 50-50s and five-0s, the next step is to learn Smith grinds. Originally invented on a vert ramp, this trick has been adapted to street skating.

3. Approach the rail with some speed and at a slight angle.

4. Snap a clean ollie, and think about placing your back truck on the rail while keeping your arms parallel to the rail.

5. Think about landing with your back heel on the rail and pointing your front foot–heel, toe. This should help in keeping the board lapped over the rail.

6. Lean back like your doing a five-0, and push the board with your back foot.

7. This trick is easier to lock into on round rails. It might sound counterintuitive, but ask Shiloh. He’ll tell you that it’s easier on a round rail than a square one.

8. Get your weight on your tail, level out the nose of your board, and get ready to land.

9. Spot your landing.

10. Don’t forget to bend those knees–absorb the impact.

11. Rotate your shoulders back to ride away straight.

12. This is definitely a hard trick to learn, but it can be pulled on rails, ledges, and any sort of ramp. Learn Smith grinds, and take it to a new spot.
