Who Will Win?
Tonight the majority of the skateboard world will converge on the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles for the TransWorld SKATEboarding Readers' and Riders' Poll Awards. Thousands of invitations were R.S.V.P.'d to, which is exciting to the point of being scary, as the seating capacity of the El Rey is in the 600 range.
The lucky 600 who make it in will be pressing palms with skateboarding's elite, until the moment of truth when the winners of the 1999 TransWorld SKATEboarding Reader's and Rider's Polls are announced. TWS peons have spent the last few months tallying mail bags full of ballots from our readers and harassing pro skaters for their Riders' Poll votes, and by ten tonight, those who made it in will know the thick and thin of it. And there were a few surprises.
The festivities will kick off at 8:00 p.m. with the presentation of World Cup Skateboarding's awards to the over-all point-winners of the 1999 contest season. Following World Cup's awards, the presentation of the Readers' then the Riders' Poll awards will take place. Afterwards, those in attendance will be treated to a sneak preview of TransWorld's new skate video Modus Operandi. Lucky bastards.
Tonight's host is none other than TransWorld Editor In Chief Dave Swift. World Cup Skateboarding's awards will be presented by the legendary Don Bostick, the Reader's Poll presenters will be vert superstars Colin McKay and Jason Ellis, and El Mysterio will be presenting the Riders' Poll awards. The festivities will also include a DJ and supporting video clips.
Sorry you can't be there for it. But hey, some of our staff probably won't even make it in, so don't feel too bad. Just check back here for the results and report--assuming that our reporter isn't denied at the door.
