At times, the opening clip of a video part really sets the tone for what you're about to witness. Maybe it's a slam, some playful B-Roll, or just an unavoidable banger—regardless, it makes you settle in and get ready. And that's exactly the vibe for Drew Nguyen's new 'Regional Ripper' part for Bronson and Contenders Boardshop.
I'll admit that I wasn't super familiar with Drew's skating before watching this, but that certainly isn't the case now. I guess this edit did its job! Because at this point, Nguyen is definitely someone worth keeping an eye on. You'll see.
The dude skates it all, which is something I've always admired. But with that said—in fairness—these days, a lot of these hungry up-and-comers skate it all. What separates them is style, power and approach. Drew checked all those boxes here.
The no-push lines and cutty back-alley spots? All just extra credit, as far as I'm concerned. Also, the dude has a mean ass backside flip! And while the whole part rips, he proves he's not afraid to jump down the big stuff towards the end. That hardflip was rad and a 13-stair 360 flip is never a bad call, even by today's standards.
Hometown heroes like Drew exist all over the country—all over the globe—but not all of them truly have what it takes to keep charging and make it happen. I'd say Drew is well on his way, as long as he keeps delivering like this. The fact that he's out there repping his local shop is just the icing on the cake. Keep charging, Drew! Good stuff.
