The Golden Era of Skateboarding at Newport Beach Film Festival

Golden Era of Skateboarding

The Newport Beach Film Festival is proud to host the North American premiere of The Golden Era of Skateboarding, a landmark documentary that captures the pioneering contests, culture, and legends that gave rise to vertical skateboarding. The pilot episode of this five-part series will screen on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 8:30 PM at Starlight Triangle Cinemas in Newport Beach.

Golden Era of Skateboarding

About the film: Spanning the transformative years of 1978 to 1980, The Golden Era of Skateboarding takes audiences inside the birth of professional vertical competition. From the Hester Series contests in San Diego to the Gold Cup Series in 1980, these pivotal events ignited a revolution in skateboarding—launching the technical tricks, culture, and energy that would carry the sport to the global stage.

The film combines rare, never-before-seen archival footage, vintage photos, and exclusive interviews with more than 45 skateboarding icons, including Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi, Jay Adams, and Eddie “El Gato” Elguera. It also connects past and present, showcasing reunions of these trailblazers at the El Gato Classic Legends Weekend, where pioneers gather decades later to celebrate their shared history.

The Golden Era of Skateboarding is not just a documentary—it’s a time capsule, a cultural record, and a tribute to the unsung athletes who defined a generation and inspired future ones.

“Having lived and competed during this incredible era, my passion drove me to create a film that honors the past while championing the future,” said Executive Producer Eddie “El Gato” Elguera. “The early years of competitive skateboarding laid the foundation for the sport to become what it is today—even making its way to the Olympics.

The skateboarders of that time never set out to change the world; they simply followed their passion. I hope The Golden Era of Skateboarding brings their stories to life, preserves their legacy, and inspires future generations to pursue their dreams with authenticity and spirit.”

Additional Screening: Wednesday, October 22, 2025 – 5:30 PM at Big Newport Theatre, Newport Beach
