TransWorld Media is like a giant hippie commune, except that instead of Earth-conscious organic farmers laboring for the good of a collective entity it's full of disillusioned individuals who constantly moan about the size of their paychecks and are openly hostile toward hippies. So, in effect, TransWorld Media is nothing like a hippie commune. That's why it was great that when Tania quit her job to go to law school, Chris Cote and Aaron Schmidt (the editor and managing editor of TransWorld SURF, respectively) offered to lend a hand by doing... Tidbits of useless information about the Tum-Yeto Canadian mega-tour.by Ed TempletonThe following is based on journal entries made during a trip across Canada by Ed (Winnipeg to Vancouver) and Deanna Templeton (who drove the entire tour). This trip is not an acid trip, like you druggie little punks are thinking about, but a skateboarding trip, which I suppose in some ways resembles an acid trip. Now, I've never done acid, but I have done some skateboarding. In fact, I'm a full-blown skateboard addict. I often abuse skateboarding and sometimes overdose on... Read more...
Trick Tips: Backside Nosegrinds With Arto Saari
|TransWorld Skateboarding
1. We've been told the secret to this trick is keeping your shoulders parallel to the object you're skating.2. Roll up on the obstacle like you're going to bust a backside 50-50.3. Once you ollie, you're going to start to shift your weight forward over the nose.4. Try to balance over your front truck, but keep your weight centered.5. It seems like it helps to relax a bit on this trick¿this helps keep your weight in the sweet spot to keep grinding.6. Start your nollie to pop out.7. Begin shifting... Read more...

Contest ResultsIn the October 2000 issue we ran two little trivia contests at the bottom of page 88. One tested your Steve Berra knowledge, challenging you to guess the name of the Fox show he co-starred on and his character's name. About a million people got the right answer, probably because if you can't find the answer on the Internet you should be removed from society. Here's who won:Faye Lozowski¿Quincy, MassachusettsTimothy Meloney¿Honeybrook, PennsylvaniaSloan Heffron¿Napa, CaliforniaJon Holland (not the TWS video guy)¿Bellevue, NebraskaSkyler Hackley¿Los Angeles, CaliforniaThe other contest proved infinitely harder... Sweden
|TransWorld Skateboarding
by Magnus GyllenbergSweden is located in the very north of Europe. It's about the same size and shape of California, but only nine-million happy inhabitants reside here. The three largest cities are Stockholm (the capital), Göteborg, and Malmö. Sweden's export successes include Volvo, Ericsson, IKEA, ABBA, and "the Swedish sin." If you've ever heard about this far-off land, it was probably something like, "All their women are blond and beautiful," or "It's where the Vikings came from." Now, all women in Sweden aren't blond, but many of them are beautiful.... Read more...
Stüssy Japan Trip
|TransWorld Skateboarding
by R. B. UmaliI was invited to join the Stüssy skate team on April 24 for a week of skating and filming in Japan. My friends at Zoo York had the pleasure of visiting Japan last year while I was taking my midterms as a senior at NYU's film school. They all came back with the craziest electronic gadgets and a million stories to tell. Needless to say, I was jealous. My dream has always been to travel the world and make skate videos, so when Chris Ortiz called and... Read more...
Starting Point: Frontside 180s With Chad Bartie

Make sure your board is level and straight for the roll-away.6. Extend those legs to absorb the landing.7. Stay centered, and try to keep your balance.8. Keep rollin'.9. Piece of cake. Read more...

|TransWorld Skateboarding
by Scott PommierIt's funny how often categories fail to encapsulate what they attempt to define. For example, some people go to school for years and they don't learn a bloody thing. They stare bleary-eyed at a dusty chalkboard expecting knowledge to seep into their heads via osmosis (which reminds me of a particularly amusing poster featuring Garfield with books strapped to his arms, legs and torso, but I digress). Concentrating on their teachers' screechy scrawls is as difficult for them as solving a Rubic's Cube in the dark. Instead they... Read more...

Holding On To The Dream?
|TransWorld Skateboarding
by Ted NewsomeLaban Pheidias was a pro skateboarder for almost a decade¿the 90s, an era of fat pants, tiny wheels, mini ramps, big gaps, green hair, late-shoves, impossibles, double grabs, one-foots, and pressure flips. Laban saw and did it all. He and Dave Bergthold ran Blockhead and then Invisible, which gave great talents like Rick Howard, Steve Berra, Matt Mumford, and Jamie Thomas the ability to further their careers. Laban had numerous pro models, video parts, and interviews. He had his own line of juggling and skateboarding videos, his own... Read more...
Gasbag: Fame
|TransWorld Skateboarding
It's very rare that a person who's driven to become famous reaches their goal. Fame isn't a 5K jog/walk, nor is it junior college¿there is no visible finishing line, and there are no rules. Fame is an enigma, wrapped tightly in a riddle, bound by a strong cord of unpredictability. There are proven methods of obtaining fame, but it's always the wrong kind. Killing or having sex with an American president makes you famous, and eating human flesh when other food is readily available also seems to carry with it... Read more...
Good Stuff: Dustin Dollin
|TransWorld Skateboarding
On the way to the skate spot, you may feel like killing him. He'll shout abuses out the window at innocent passersby, while explaining to you the finer details of the previous night's exploits. It's true that he could talk a glass eye to sleep. Most thoughts of murdering him usually go away when you arrive at a spot and Dustin begins to skate, though. You just can't fault the bugger¿he puts in 100 percent all the time. He's not the most caring person in the world, but we wouldn't... Read more...

Age: 20Home: San Jose, CaliforniaSponsors: Maple Skateboards, NC Skate ShopWhen I was little one thing scared me the most besides the dark. It was when I misbehaved, and my father would come at me with this fiery intensity in his eyes and "discipline" me with a blue fly-swatter he kept behind the fridge. Sometimes he'd just be walking by the fridge and I'd run in sheer terror. You see, it wasn't the fear of pain, because I hardly felt anything under my dad's shouting and my crying, but the intensity... Read more...

Armed with bags of clothes and boxes of skateboards, three young skateboarders and a photographer traveling from place to place embarked on unfamiliar territory and different languages. This group of skaters traveled from skatepark to skatepark, stopping off at skate shop after skate shop, skating their little hearts out 'til they couldn't skate any more. The first place their feet landed was in a... Anthony Van Engelen Interview
|TransWorld Skateboarding
One time in Southern California I saw a man on a small skateboard pushing with his hands. The man only had a torso, in all he was a gut, ribs, arms, head. No legs. He wore a beard, long-brown hair, flannel shirt, and huge aviator shades. As he got close to me I was quite frightened by his appearance. Being all of seven years old, I'd never seen anything like him. I will always have his image embroidered in my head. I've known Anthony Van Engelen for some odd years... Read more...

From the start I'd always skated differently than the rest of the skaters. I'd invent my own weird tricks like finger-flip airs and varial gay twists. Because of my flippy tricks I became known as the "Circus Skater." And my style ... I hated my style. People ripped on it constantly.I... Read more...

Jurassic 5Quality ControlInterscope RecordsIt's always refreshing to hear some good hip-hop from the West Coast. In the early days, the Los Angeles scene was mainly gangsta rap, which told tales of drugs, gang-bangin', and more drugs and gang-bangin'. But now a new sound has emerged and it's a more positive, boost-yourself-up kind of hip-hop focusing on knowledge of self. Groups like Tha Alcaholiks (the whole Liquid crew), Dilated Peoples, and of course, Jurassic 5 have come along and distilled the stigma of a "gangsta only" West Coast. With outstanding craftsmanship... Read more...

The Flip team travels to the South of France in search of Tom Penny.by SkinGarage-bound in the heart of Oxford, England, the infamous Flip tour van had been trying to get a new lease on life, though it was becoming a major pain in the ass of the mechanic who'd taken on the job of trying to restore it to its former condition when it used to effortlessly haul the Flip team around Europe.
