Brain Floss -- Andy Warde
|TransWorld Skateboarding
Andy WardeWearing someone else's shoes for a day is impossible-well, not really. But becoming them for a day is. I think wearing Andy's size eights for a day would not only be uncomfortable (because his feet are much smaller than mine), but interesting as well, because he's a strange character-but aren't we all. Most of all, I'd like to know how he creates these images in his head and translates them to canvas. Where do such ideas come from?I first met Andy back in 1991-P.E. class. Mrs. Swanson was our... Trick Tip - Kickflip Backside Nosegrind Pop Out With Joey Brezinski
|TransWorld Skateboarding
1. First learn nose manuals on a curb by ollieing up, leaning forward on the nose, and holding your balance.2. Assuming you have kickflips down already, start by trying to backside nosegrind a bench or ledge from beginning to end.3. Once you have the nosegrinds down, start easing off the grind in the middle of the obstacle by doing a slight nollie and hop off the ledge to clear it.4. Now combine everything you've learned. Start by doing a kickflip to backside 50-50 to get comfortable. Then start throwing kickflips... Read more...

Puttin' It On Wax? John Lucero's Your Man"Man, this spot is so tight! All we need to do is wax these ledges up a little and then we'll be on point."How many times have you and your buddies caught yourselves thinking a similar thought? Countless, right? Anytime we stumble upon virgin territory, it's one of the first things out of our mouths. As a matter of fact, it's one of the ways we judge whether a spot is truly new or just new to us.A waxed curb or ledge lets... Read more...
Video Reviews

Round 3AlmostWe've waited a while. Supposed "footage" from this video surfaced at ASR in the fall of 2003 when Almost debuted as a company. It was incredible then; it's incredible now. But if you were there, don't think you have one up on anyone who wasn't, because lots of new stuff has been filmed since-that ASR loop was just a teaser.Round 3 is just plain fun to watch, and the soundtrack is good, too. Chris Haslam has people stoked lately and delivers a part full of his signature tech/hesh, early... Read more...
Starting Point
|TransWorld Skateboarding
1. The motions of this move are very similar to a backside lipslide, so I'd recommend learning backside lipslides first.2. Don't bother learning stationary backside noseblunts first, because they won't help you in learning the backside noseblunt slide. 3. Approach the ramp with as much speed as possible at the same angle as a backside lipslide.4. Point your board's nose at a slight angle so that when you land on the deck, you're almost in a nosegrind. 5. Try and nollie out as soon as you begin to slide-the trick... Read more...
Trick Tip - Big Spin Flips By Jake Nunn
|TransWorld Skateboarding
1. So you need to know how to do big flips. First, you should be comfortable with popping a big spin off the ground.2. The key to this is scooping your tail-use your big toe on your back foot-while starting to turn backside. Really work on catching the board at least 90 degrees, while making sure your backside rotation comes all the way around. It's what I like to call blindedsided, so have faith that you'll make it around, even though you can't see.3. Second, you must master 360 flips-and... Read more...
Villa Villa Cola-Road Trip

This crew consisted of Lisa Whitaker, Lori D., Nicole Morgan, Faye Jaime, Van Nguyen, Vanessa Torres, Amy Caron, and me, and on the return trip we smuggled Nugget across the Canadian border-Nugget is a person and a star of skate majesty reigning from Canada. Now listen closely because someday this could happen to you. I think it started at the In-N-Out Burger or perhaps it was long before-a war was waged between vehicles. Faye, a member of the Impala posse, and Vanessa, devoted rider of the Crown Vic, sat across... Read more...

Starting Point - Stalefish Grab
|TransWorld Skateboarding
1. A stalefish is when you grab the backside of your board with your back hand just in front of your back foot. It's most often done going frontside, but it can be done any way. Like a lot of other tricks, Tony Hawk invented the stalefish back in 1985. However, it was the Gonz who injected style into it and made it popular. 2. Now that you know what a stalefish is and where it comes from, you're ready to do one. I'm assuming you can already do frontside... Read more...
Brain Floss-Van De Greik
|TransWorld Skateboarding
By Tobin YellandWhen did you first discover photography? In San Francisco, working with you and Dennis McGrath. At first it was kind of a money thing. I thought if I took skateboard photos I could make some money, but then I just got totally obsessed with taking pictures and forgot about the job aspect. What was the best thing about photography when you started? It was just like capturing certain moments. That decisive moment that Henri Cartier Bresson wrote about. He created the concept of the decisive moment. I kind of... Read more...
Brain Floss - Gary Van De Greik
|TransWorld Skateboarding
Gary Van De GreikGary Van De Greik is the kind of visual-artist poet who seems to have had no choice in the matter of becoming an artist. His art comes from the skin and bones of his presence rather than the force of will or ambition. He's an example of that rumored happenstance-the born artist. His visionary insights grew unimpeded in some private preserve of his consciousness while the external circumstances of his life were harsh and chaotic. These streams all run together in the luminous truth of Van De... Read more...
No Limit Soldiers - It's 2005 already
|TransWorld Skateboarding
BeginningsIt's 2005 already.Wasn't it just yesterday when, while the rest of the world was running amuck attempting to patch their computers, hoard canned goods, and construct bomb shelters, we skateboarders were only consumed and mystified by the talents of Kirchart, Koston, Way, Hawk, Thomas, and Penny, who at the time seemed to have pushed skateboarding to its limits? It was the end of a century-one that birthed skateboarding, and one that certainly wouldn't end it (well, maybe you thought so if you were busy figuring out if you should stack more... Paycheck - Christian Hosoi
|TransWorld Skateboarding
Christian Hosoi revolutionized the skateboarding industry in every way imaginable.Because Christian grew up skating Marina Skatepark with major pros like Jay Adams and Shogo Kubo as his friends-not to mention that his dad Ivan managed the park-it's no surprise that at just fourteen years of age he became one of skateboarding's first teenage pros, pulling in a cool 1,600 dollars a month. When parks closed with the downturn in skating's popularity, backyard ramps and PVC coping became the norm, and Christian's style of doing tailtaps and tricks to tail inspired him... Stellastarr*Stellastarr*RCA RecordsThe guys (and girl) in New York's newest big-name art-school band, Stellastarr*, have excellent haircuts. They've also managed to put together a debut album that's equal parts pure thievery and brilliance. There's rampant pillaging going on here, which, rather than make me go running for my Pixies or New Order records, made me turn Stellastarr*'s CD up louder.Singer Shawn Christensen has a perfect new-wave voice-his falsetto yelp is almost all you need to want to relive the early 80s, although this time you'll thankfully be out of kindergarten. Back In The Day - Chris Hall
|TransWorld Skateboarding
Chris Hall and his skateboarding career may have thrived in a time when skateboarding was at one of its low points-the early 90s-but the innovation that came from him and those he looked up to (Ocean Howell, Pepe Martinez, Mark Gonzales, among others) during the time was crucial to street skating's evolution. It's their shoveting, reverting, manualing, and shuffling that has lessened the monotony of simply jumping "down."After logging time skating for Venture, Dogtown, New Deal, Underworld Element, Vision Street Wear, and Airwalk, Chris fell out of love with skateboarding... Spot Check - Brighton, Utah
|TransWorld Skateboarding
Brighton has been a breeding ground for professional snowboarders for decades. From George Johnston to JP Walker, practically every rider who is from or has lived in Utah has frequented Brighton. It may not be world famous (yet) for its Superpipe or ridiculous park, but it's known for the easy-access backcountry terrain. I doubt a season has gone by where Brighton hasn't been documented in both snowboard magazines and videos. Whether you want to jib some park rails, huck yourself on some big kickers, ride trees and chutes, or bomb... Read more...
